Westfield Academy Holds 171st Graduation Ceremony

The Westfield Academy and Central School held its 171st Annual Commencement on Saturday, June 28th. Fifty members of the Class of 2008 received diplomas.

Major David Appel, a 1977 graduate of Westfield Academy and Central School and a pilot in the US Air Force, gave the Commencement Address. He was introduced by School Superintendent Mark Sissel.

Roundtable Discussion on Election Legitimacy Held at Chautauqua

US Congressman Brian Higgins, New York State Assemblyman Bill Parment and Chautauqua County Executive Gregory Edwards took part in a political roundtable Monday afternoon entitled "Restoring Legitimacy to our Election System". But it was not so much the restoration of legitimacy to the election system that was analyzed, but the restoration of focus to the process.

Westfield Memorial Hospital's Maternity Department has welcomed many babies into the world over the years, but a special delivery occurred on June 20. Finnigen Scott Reynolds, born at 11:03 p.m., became the hospital's last delivery as the maternity department ended its services on June 22 in anticipation of the official closure of the unit on June 30.

Audit Reveals Excessive Fund Balance at WACS

New York State Real Property Tax Law limits a school district's unappropriated fund balance to 3 percent of the subsequent year's budget. A recent audit of the Westfield Academy and Central School by the State Comptroller's Office cites the district for having an unappropriated fund balance at the end of the 2006-07 fiscal year of $2.4 million, or more than 17 percent of the 2007-08 budget.
