Fredonia, Westfield, Brocton football team to be called Badgers

The Fredonia-Westfield-Brocton football team members have decided to call themselves the Badgers, Westfield Academy and Central School board members learned at their regular meeting.

High School Principal Ivana Hite told the board the students put a lot of thought and research into the naming of their team.

A badger is a mammal with short legs and signature stripes on its face. Because it lives underground, it has long claws for digging as well as sharp teeth for its omnivorous diet. The University of Wisconsin also has a badger as its mascot, nicknamed Bucky.

Hite said she also met with principals from Fredonia and Brocton to discuss homecoming. The homecoming dance will be held at Brocton, she said.

Each district will have its own homecoming week and its own homecoming court, Hite said. "We will have our spirit week here at Westfield like we've always had," she said. "We're still going to have the parade and the floats."

Board member Brenda Backus said she came from the Badgers parent meeting and the impression was favorable.

"We're off to a good start with Badgers as our mascot and team name," she added.
