Larry D. Maytum

MAYVILLE - Larry D. Maytum of Mayville, New York died Tuesday, May 23 in Greenhurst, New York after a lengthy illness. Born June 12, 1939 in Plankinton, South Dakota, he was the son of Zona I. Kieffer Maytum and Charles Leo Maytum. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Prudence Wright Maytum, who he married on April 23, 1960 and who died on March 2, 2010, and one sister, Sharon Quiggins.

A graduate of Mayville Central School Class of 1957 and a Marine Corps veteran who obtained the rank of Lance Corporal, Larry had a long career in the automotive industry and was the owner/operator of several businesses in the Mayville area during his lifetime; including Larry's Mobil, "A" Garage, Larry's Auto Repair, and Mayville Auto Parts, from which he retired in 2007 due to ill health.

Larry was a respected local businessman, known for his honest and straightforward manner and his high level of integrity and commitment to his customers. He was a life-long automobile enthusiast and NASCAR fan and his businesses supported many local stock cars. He enjoyed refurbishing antique vehicles, most notably the vintage 1924 Sheldon fire truck currently owned by the Mayville Fire Department that makes an appearance each year in the town's Fourth of July parade. He also had a love for animals, especially his cat, Tabby.

Larry will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, who were his treasure and the joy of his life.

Survivors include three children: Cheri (Jim) Krull, Cynthia Maytum, both of Ashville and Steven (Mary Jane) Maytum of Sellersburg, Indiana, as well as six grandchildren: Kaitlin (Paul) Dominiak of Cambridge, England; Kelsey Krull (Anthony Sulkowski) of Pittsburgh; Kylie Krull (Keith Stam) of Newport, Kentucky; Joy, and Andre Maytum of Sellersburg, Indiana; and Kieffer Maytum of Ashville, and two great-granddaughters, Sophia and Eleanor Dominiak of Cambridge, England. He is also survived by two brothers, Kenneth "Bud" (Janice) Maytum and Charles "Chuck" (Roxie) Maytum.

At Larry's request, no visitation will be observed and all services will be private. Freay Funeral Home in Mayville is handling arrangements for the family.

Memorials may be made to the Chautauqua Humane Society.
