Positive Westfield experiences win a paw print

Westfield Academy and Central School's Positive Behavioral Interventions Support Committee and the Elementary faculty, under the leadership of principal Dr. Mary Rockey created a Polar Express themed Incentive day for their students on Wednesday, Dec. 21, and it was PAWSITIVELY Magical!

One goal of Westfield's program is to help our students take an active role in creating a safe, healthy and positive school environment.

We want them to take pride in themselves, their school and their peers so that everyone can learn and grow together. We are doing this THE WESTFIELD WAY!!!

Students in kindergarten through fifth grades have been earning Westfield Pride Paw Prints for the last several years for exhibiting positive social, emotional and academic behavioral traits in any area of their school life.

Every 100 paws earned by a class would allow individual classes an incentive, either from an incentive menu provided from the Positive Behavioral Interventions Support committee or an incentive created by the classroom teacher.

This year the committee wanted to increase the element of school unity to the already successful program. We decided to continue the smaller individual classroom incentives for each 100 paws milestone, but encouraged all classes to reach 300 paws by early December to participate in a Polar Paw Express Extravaganza!

The committee used the "Polar Express" movie, based off the book by Christopher Van Allsburg, to plan the event. The students and staff wore pajamas to school, decorated cookies, drank delicious hot cocoa or melted snowman (water), took group pictures at a Polar Paw Express Caboose photo booth, props and all, and finished the day viewing the Polar Express movie in the auditorium.

The committee worked hard to decorate our school for the event and the children, both big and small, loved the experience. The smiles were amazing!

The committee received a lot of positive feedback on the event and has been planning for future schoolwide Incentive Days.
