Beginners Bonsai classes to be offered this spring, summer and fall

May 16, 2017
Westfield Republican

Starting this month bonsai enthusiast, Trenton Lutes, will begin teaching his Art of Bonsai for Beginners classes at locations around Chautauqua County and even into Pennsylvania. The two hour long classes are an engaging and fun way to introduce yourself to the fascinating Japanese art of creating bonsai trees. Lutes will be offering a total of six classes that will be open to the public and an additional two classes for the employees of The Resource Center at the Jamestown/Celoron location.

Lutes takes the class time to discuss the history of Bonsai and several of the more popular styles of trees including: Informal Upright, Literati and Semi-Cascade, all while instructing the class on how to turn a hand selected nursery plant into a bonsai tree of their very own. Lutes provides all of the supplies that you need to create your own bonsai including: a hand selected nursery plant, bonsai pot, wire, soil and even a pocket guide to bonsai. Tools are also provided by Lutes for use during the class. Nursery plant stock can vary by class depending on what is seasonally available, but to date Lutes has used several varieties of trees including: flowering, small leaf rhododendron, procumbens juniper, blue star juniper and boxwood. Each variety of tree creates its own unique look for bonsai and each individual plant creates a unique bonsai tree specific to the stylings of the student.

Lutes, who is from Westfield, has been working with bonsai for over seven years and has been featured in local papers as well as Lake Erie Lifestyle Magazine. He is a member of the Buffalo Bonsai Society and is also a local artist focusing on his acrylic paint skins with photographic transfers. This will be Lutes' third year teaching his Art of Bonsai for Beginners classes. Lutes thoroughly enjoys sharing his passion for this unusual art form with his students and hopes to continue teaching these classes for years to come.
