Dear Editor:

The Westfield Food Pantry would like to thank the Girl Scout Troop 20173 for visiting the Pantry at 101 E. Main St., located in the First United Methodist church and for their donation of non-perishable food items.

The girls asked some interesting questions such as:

Do you need money to come to the food pantry? No, all the food is free to those who need it.

How do you know how much to give to a family? We have to follow guidelines of HPNAP given to us by the Food Bank of WNY so much of vegetables, fruit, proteins meat non-meat and dairy and grains according to the number of people in the household.

Do you ever run out of food? No, we order food from the Food Bank in Buffalo or go to stores to buy what is needed. Sometimes we don't have everything we stock such as pancake mix, boxed potatoes, paper products, peanut butter, canned chicken, canned meals and even cereal at times.

How do you pay for what you get in? The Food Bank gets grants from different places or donated food to put toward each food pantry's order. We also get local donations from the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, companies in the area who give each year. Westfield churches Presbyterian, Assembly of God, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Episcopal, Light House Christian Fellowship. The Family Dollar as well as local farms and individuals give so generously to the food pantry either in monetary donations or food items. Coming up are the Boy Scout and the Postal Carrier drives, which we are so thankful for.

Do you provide food in an emergency? Yes, we will give to those who need help in emergency situations.

What do people do to receive food? They stop in at the church office and fill out paperwork which follow the income guidelines give to us by The Food Bank.

Do you have other items besides non-perishable? Yes, we have meat, margarine, cheese, etc. and sometimes fresh fruit and vegetables.

Do you provide anything else? Yes, we have a clothing section outside the food pantry for those who need such items.

Does anyone receive money to work at the food pantry? No, it is all volunteer work, we have seven teams taking turns working on Tuesday from 1 to 2:30 to give the food out. The teams come from the community to volunteer their time as well as the treasurer, volunteer coordinator, food pantry coordinator and delivery help that is available when an order comes in or a food drive takes place.

We were pleased to have the visit and for the questions they asked.

Thank you, girls.

Betty and David Syper
