Carol Louise Neckers

Carol Louise Neckers, 87 of 9654 Route 430 Sherman, N.Y., passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, in her home.

She was born Sept. 14, 1925, in the Town of Pomfret, the daughter of the late Luther Harry and Anna Einhouse Bowen.

Carol was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and home maker. She was a wonderful cook, and there were often extra people around the table. She not only raised their five children, but also helped raise 24 foster children. She was active in her church as pianist, Sunday school teacher, superintendent and deaconess. Through the years she also transported many people to church, making sure those who needed a ride to church got one. Carol and her husband Norman enjoyed traveling.

Carol is survived by her husband, Norman Neckers of Sherman, whom she married May 2, 1946; five children, Nancy (Jerry) Meerdink of North Clymer, N.Y., Leonard (Sue) Neckers of North Clymer, N.Y., Linda (Joseph Jr.) Bittinger of Sherman, N.Y., Audrey (Douglas) Sliker of Sherman, N.Y., and Eileen (Thomas) Sparling, Westfield, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Carl (Kris) Neckers, Scott (Willowe) Neckers, April (Rick) Pratt, Steven (Janice) Bittinger, Jeremy (Monica) Meerdink, Carolyn (Christopher) Hughesman, Benjamin Meerdink, Jonathan (Sandra) Meerdink; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, Joy Eastman, Hope Glover, Jay Bowen, Ruth Rutledge and Melvin Bowen.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Helen Riewaldt Bowen.

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 8 at the North Clymer United Methodist Church, with Pastors William Nicholson and Brett Scarem, officiating. Burial was in Mina Cemetery.

Friends were received from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at the Spitzer Funeral Home, Sherman, N.Y., and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
