Challengers win contested seats

MAYVILLE - Some of the county's villages held elections on Tuesday, March 19.

In races where seats where challenged, all of the challengers prevailed. Incumbents in Brocton, Sherman and Westfield lost their seats.

Village of Westfield

Michael VandeVelde was elected the new mayor of the Village of Westfield on Tuesday, March 19.

In the race for Village Mayor, challenger Michael VandeVelde of Westfield, who was endorsed by the Democratic and Westfield First Parties, was elected with 519 votes while incumbent David Carr of Westfield, who was endorsed by the Republican and Concord Parties, lost with 227 votes. There were also two write-in votes.

In the race for two Village Trustee seats, incumbent Robert Cochran of Westfield, who was endorsed by the Democratic and Westfield First Parties, was reelected with 547 votes and, by a 12 vote margin, challenger Debra Puckhaber of Westfield, who was endorsed by the Democratic and Westfield First Parties, was elected to the second seat with 349 votes.

Incumbent Chris Jaynes of Westfield, who was endorsed by the Westfield Republican and Concord Parties, lost with 337 votes and challenger Tom Rackowski of Westfield, who was endorsed by the Republican and Concord Parties, lost with 223 votes.

In the race for Village Justice, Incumbent Jeffrey Thomas of Westfield, who was endorsed by the Democratic and Westfield First Parties, was elected with 648 votes, as he was the only candidate running. There were three write-in votes.

Village of Brocton

In the race for two Village Trustee seats, challenger Gary Planty of Brocton, who was endorsed by the Democratic and Concord Parties, was elected with 109 votes as was challenger Arthur Donovan of Portland, who was endorsed by the Democratic and Concord Parties, with 88 votes.

Incumbent Nicholas Rizzo III of Brocton, who was endorsed by the Republican Party, lost with 33 votes.

Village of Panama

In the race for one Village Trustee seat, incumbent Gregory Ireland of Panama, who was endorsed by the Taxpayers Party, was reelected with 10 votes, as he was the only candidate running.

Village of Sherman

In the race for Village Mayor, incumbent John Patterson, Jr., of Sherman, who was endorsed by the Peoples Party, was reelected with 97 votes, as he was the only candidate running. There was one write-in vote.

In the race for two Village Trustee seats, incumbent Brett Cook of Sherman, who was endorsed by the Peoples Party, was reelected with 85 votes and, by a seven point margin, challenger Donna Higginbotham of Sherman, who was endorsed by the Citizens First Party, was elected with 60 votes.

Incumbent William Wiggers of Sherman, who was endorsed by the Peoples Party, lost with 53 votes. There was one write-in vote.
