Just Outside My Door 03/07/13

March 13, 2013

We certainly had a "winter wonderland" just outside my door last week, and this week began the same way.

Although it has been very cold, we had little snow accumulation. According to the calendar, spring arrives in just 14 days, but the calendar is not a good weather forecaster. In our area, we well know the month of March often has a variety of weather conditions. Possibly we'll have some almost spring-like days, but we could also have cold, snowy, rainy or even a snowstorm.

I recall having had very wintry days in the month of March. I clearly remember having a picnic at Mayville Park on Decoration Day some years ago, and it was so cold we wished we had worn a winter coats. Nevertheless, when this unpredictable season arrives folk often begin to think about planting flowers, washing windows and a host of other outdoor activities. Most years the creeks begin gurgling their merry tunes letting us know the ice in them is melting, and I get the urge to visit ours. I also like to look for a wild flower that's burst into bloom and listen for the first bird song.

Meanwhile, I can force some flowers into bloom inside by cutting some forsythia, pussy willows and other flowers and putting them in water inside. Or one could take a trip to Florida or some other southern state. That would be a good choice, although it takes money and time off for those who are employed.
