According to her mother, Lea King knew she wanted to be in the armed forces since she was 7.

"When she was 7, we took her to an air show," said Michele King, Lea's mother. "When she saw the airplanes, she started saying, 'Army, Army, Army.' As she got older, she (started) looking into all the military branches, and she decided on the Air Force - but she knew she wanted to serve ever since she was 7."

King, a 2010 graduate of Chautauqua Lake High School, is currently serving as an airman first class at Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Mo.

King entered basic training in January 2011 and graduated in March. She then attended technical training at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas for Aircraft Armament before being moved to Whiteman.

As a trade, King loads and unloads bombs onto B-2 Stealth Bombers. Because of how important it is for King to be a master of her trade, she is often running practice drills when there are no B-2 Bombers which need to be equipped with bombs.
