Coach should be thanked for decades of service

Dear Editor,

Thursday night (Feb. 14) after the Lady Wolverines basketball team's loss to Forestville, more than just a season came to an end. What none of us in the stands knew until after the game was we no longer would be seeing Coach Morrison standing on the sidelines, doing what he loves, coaching his girls.

Coach Richard Morrison has been involved in Westfield Academy and Central School girls' basketball for 20 years. In this time frame he has some amazing seasons and some that are better to forget. However, no statistics can show his dedication to the team and to the girls and to the community. From helping out with the current village recreation program for girls in grades three through six held on Saturdays, to sponsoring various fundraisers and tournaments, to the varsity team's annual trip to see a women's NCAA game, Coach Morrison, and his wife Lynn, did whatever they could so the girls could experience the game. But it wasn't just about basketball. Coach Morrison encouraged the girls to become better students, that there was a reason why it was called student-athlete and not athlete-student. He wanted them to succeed in their academics and to learn the value of education and learning. The list could go on.

For the last 20 years, I have truly seen and heard his commitment to basketball, how it has influenced his family, his daughters, my daughter, etc. Regardless of what one may think of his abilities as a coach, one can never question his dedication and commitment.

So, thank you Coach Morrison for your years of dedication and service to our girls and the community. Our family will miss seeing you walk the sidelines. And although you might not have the title of coach anymore, I know you will continue to reach out to the community and the students, as that is just who you are.
