Mayville’s Winter Festival features activities for all ages

MAYVILLE - The 2013 President's Day Weekend Winter Festival being held Friday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 17 at Lakeside Park in Mayville will feature winter activities and events for all ages.

Some of the events include a cold water rescue demonstration provided by Dewittville Fire Department, a polar bear swim benefiting the Mayville Food Pantry - call 753-3113 for information or a sponsorship form - snowmobile rides provided by Chautauqua Lake Snowmobile Club weather permitting, a pet parade - call 269-7829 to participate- a chili cook-off - call 753-0981 to participate - a bonfire, flare parade weather permitting, fireworks by Skylighters of New York, snowshoe demonstrations by Evergreen Outfitters weather permitting, vendors, contests with cash prizes, Rainbow the Clown, expanded children's activities, as well as many others.

A new contest joins the line-up this year. A Legos creation building contest for ages 5 to 15 based on creativity, sponsored by North Shore Specialties Refinishing of Mayville, will take place throughout the festival weekend at the also new Lego Play Area inside the Community Center. The judging will take place Sunday at the festival.

The snowball distance throwing contest for ages 4 to adult, sponsored by Westfield Dodge City, will again take place at the festival on Saturday.

The children's snowman and animal building contest, or alternate contest if weather doesn't permit, for ages 4 to 12 will be held on Sunday afternoon at the Festival, with sponsorship provided by Andriaccio's Restaurant of Mayville. Participants provide their own accessories for their snowman or animal creation with judging based on creativity. All of these contests have cash prizes for first and second place in different age categories.

This festival is truly a community wide event. Many of our businesses are also holding special events in conjunction with this annual winter festival. Chautauqua Suites Meeting and Expo Center in Mayville will hold an indoor yard sale Saturday, Feb. 16 and Sunday, Feb. 17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their location.

The Mayville Library will hold its annual Cabin Fever Used Book Sale on Friday, Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library in Mayville.

The Lakeview Hotel in Mayville will host several events that weekend. On Friday, Feb. 15 at 10 p.m., the Lakeview will host DJ Rodney as well as having a Toga Party at the same time. On Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m., the Lakeview will host the musical group Still Cool, formerly Barefoot Sarah, and at 10 p.m. the same evening the group Synergy will perform.

Chautauqua Institution will play host to horse drawn rides by the Draft Horse Association members on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3:30 p.m., with tickets purchased at the Chautauqua Book Store.

Webb's Captain's Table Restaurant in Mayville will hold a wine tasting with complimentary hours d'oeuvres on Friday, Feb. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. It will also have an evening of jazz on Saturday, Feb. 16 beginning at 7:30 p.m., featuring performers The Chris Vogt Duo.

The Portage Hill Art Gallery, Rt. 394, Westfield will also host several events that weekend. On Saturday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 17 from 2 to 5 p.m., the art gallery will host a showing featuring Carol Posch Comstock "Capturing Fleeting Beauty - Snowflake Photography." It is also offering free hot cider and ice cream samples with local grape syrup or maple syrup at the art gallery from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Wine tasting will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 16 by 21 Brixx Winery in a tent on property adjacent to the Village Park from 1 to 5 p.m.
