'The Selfish Giant' musical
"The Selfish Giant," a new musical written by Kent Knappenberger for Westfield area church youth, will be performed Saturday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 18 at 3 p.m., in the Westfield Academy and Central School auditorium.
The musical, approximately one hour in length, is based on a children's story of the same title by Oscar Wilde. The story is of a giant who has placed a wall around his garden with the claim that trespassers will be prosecuted. Because of this, winter lives in his garden year round. One day, a hole in the wall is discovered by a child, who turns out to be the boy Jesus and he sneaks in. Spring returns to the garden when the other children arrive and the giant realizes what he has done by shutting out others. The giant is renewed and spring enters his heart in the form of love.
The musical is appropriate for viewers of all ages and features a cast of children ages 6 to 18. The cost is a donation. Six local and world-wide missions will benefit from this event. The following organizations, chosen by the cast members, will receive equal gifts from the proceeds: Appleseed Preschool, World Vision, Roswell Park, People's Central Institute, Nothing But Nets and the African Well Project.
