By Dennis Phillips
For 45 years, Jamestown’s awning needs have been met by a family owned and operated business, a fact owner, Mark Saxton, and his wife, Michelle, like to be known for. ‘‘We’re very proud of the fact that we are a family owned and family operated business meeting the tri-state area’s awning needs,’’ Saxton said. ‘‘We take pride in our craftsmanship.’’ Jamestown Awning and Tents Inc. custom makes commercial and residential window, door and patio awnings to meet specific needs, with complete installation and take down, storage and cleaning services. The company also specializes in boat covers, porch enclosures, roll and privacy curtains, boat and boat lift covers, seat cushions, air conditioner covers, truck-bed covers and tarps. The awnings come in a variety of materials from fabric to vinyl to aluminum. The company also custom manufactures and services other products like car port covers. Another service Saxton is proud of is the company’s custom-made flags from state to country. Saxton said the best part of running his business, which is located at 289 Steele St., is interacting with the people he gets to meet from his clients to his staff of about 20 employees. ‘‘I love interacting with the people,’’ he said. ‘‘I enjoy working with my employees and working with people to give them exactly what they want.’’ As part of the services Jamestown Awning provides, Saxton said he goes to people’s homes to discuss what the customer wants, taking measurements and custom designing the awning necessary for the client. Saxton said once he has a clients information, he goes and designs the awning in a computer simulated program, which give an accurate depiction of what it will look like on a home or porch to help the customer get a better idea of how the awning will appear once the job is done. ‘‘We take pride in seeing our awnings on a home or a business as we drive down city streets,’’ Saxton said. ‘‘We like to say ‘We put the finishing touches on a home or a business.’’’ One service Saxton said Jamestown Awning specializes in is winter curtains for porches or patios to save energy during the winter time, which also means customers saving money on their heating bills. ‘‘The winter curtains enclose the entire porch, blocking the wind and the cold,’’ Mrs. Saxton said. ‘‘You can have windows and doors in it and different designs and looks. When the spring comes we take them down, cleaning them and store them until next winter.’’ The company’s annual services for all of its products include season removal, storage, washing, waterproofing and inspections. The business also will repair fabric awnings as well. The company also does tent services, with 200 varieties and sizes from 10-foot to 250-foot available for rent to service small to large parties. The tents are used for wedding receptions, graduation parties, school reunions and for business promotional events. ‘‘We meet a lot of nice people doing weddings. They look so beautiful, especially by the lake,’’ Mrs. Saxton said. Jamestown Awning takes appointments by phone at 483-1435 or by walk-ins. Also, people can e-mail inquires to the business at
